2023 Ford Edge Recall: Headlight Brightness and Alignment Issues Explained
On September 5, 2023, Ford issued a recall for certain 2023 Ford Edge SUVs due to a front right headlight defect. Specifically, the issue involves brightness and alignment problems that could blind oncoming drivers. Because of this risk, the affected headlights fail to meet federal safety standards.
As a result, Ford initiated a recall to address the problem before it leads to accidents or injuries.
What’s Behind the 2023 Ford Edge Recall?
Ford traced the issue to a misalignment inside the headlight assembly. More precisely, the problem occurs between the folder assembly and the high-beam reflector within the Bi-LED module.
Because of this misalignment, the headlight produces what Ford described as a “yellow halo condition.” This halo affects beam pattern accuracy and causes light to scatter in unintended directions. Consequently, the headlight may exceed allowable glare limits set by federal regulations.
How Ford Discovered the Headlight Issue
The issue first appeared in May 2023 during routine checks at an assembly plant. At that time, workers noticed a Ford Edge headlight producing an unusual yellow halo.
Soon after, the supplier reviewed six suspected headlights. Of those six units, four failed to meet federal standards for photometric intensity and beam linearity. Based on those findings, Ford expanded its investigation.
Investigation Results and Affected Vehicles
Ford reviewed supplier production records from May through June 2023. During that process, engineers identified headlights built between January 10 and January 17, 2023 as potentially defective.
Initially, Ford estimated that 5,445 vehicles could be affected. However, after further review, the total increased to 8,523 Ford Edge SUVs.
In June, the supplier tested 102 headlights from the affected production window. Seven of those units failed to meet federal lighting standards, confirming the need for a recall.
Current Status of the Recall
As of August 2023, Ford has not received any warranty claims, accident reports, or injury complaints related to this issue. Even so, the company chose to act proactively.
Ford plans to mail recall notification letters to affected owners on October 9, 2023. Dealers will inspect the headlights and replace assemblies if necessary.
