2015 – The nightmare year for Ram Trucks!

HID and LED Bulb Upgrades Explained

If you own a 2015 Ram 1500 and tried upgrading to HID or LED bulbs, you’ve probably run into problems. You’re not alone. The 2015 model year stands out for all the wrong reasons when it comes to lighting upgrades.

Before you buy another kit, let’s break down what makes this year different.

Why 2015 Rams Are Different

Starting in 2003, Dodge moved away from simple relay-based lighting systems. Instead, they introduced CANBUS and TIPM controls.

Here’s how it works:

  • The headlight switch sends a signal to the vehicle computer.

  • The computer sends instructions to the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module).

  • The TIPM supplies power to the headlights and fog lights.

  • The CANBUS system monitors power draw continuously.

If the system detects too much or too little current, it shuts the circuit down or triggers a warning.

That system already made upgrades more complicated. Then, in 2015, Dodge added another layer.

The Real Problem: PWM Programming

In 2015, Ram implemented PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) into the lighting system.

PWM controls voltage by pulsing power rapidly. However, Dodge programmed the system incorrectly on many trucks.

Some 2015 Rams ran headlights as low as 11 volts. Others fluctuated around 13 volts instead of the proper 14 volts.

That instability caused flickering—even with factory halogen bulbs.

Both projector and quad reflector models experienced the issue. No trim level avoided it.

Because HID and LED bulbs react more sensitively to voltage fluctuations, the problem worsens after upgrades.

Common 2015 Ram HID & LED Issues

Owners report a wide range of problems:

  • Flickering headlights

  • Dash error messages

  • One headlight shutting off intermittently

  • Both headlights cutting out

  • Strobing bulbs

  • Lights shutting off after 15–20 minutes

  • Pulsating brightness

  • Headlights failing to turn on

In many cases, halogen bulbs also show symptoms. That confirms the issue originates from the truck—not the bulbs.

Why Most “Fixes” Fail

Several companies offer solutions. Some temporarily reduce flickering. However, many systems fail later.

Popular options include:

  • Morimoto Mopar-Spec HID Relay Harness

  • Diode Dynamics PWM Modules

  • GTR Lighting PWM Modules

While these products can help, none guarantee permanent success. Each truck behaves slightly differently.

What You Should Do First

If you own a 2015 Ram and want brighter headlights, start here:

 Visit the Dealer

Ask the dealership to check for TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins) related to headlight flickering. Even if your halogen lights seem fine, your truck may need recalibration.

 Test Methodically

If you proceed with upgrades, start with the simplest solution. Then move up the list only if necessary.

Work with a company willing to troubleshoot alongside you. Patience helps here.

Final Thoughts

The 2015 Ram lighting system combines CANBUS, TIPM, and flawed PWM programming. That combination creates unpredictable behavior.

Later Ram models improved the calibration. However, 2015 remains the most troublesome year for lighting upgrades.

If you’re determined to upgrade, prepare for some trial and error. Otherwise, consider full headlight assembly replacements designed specifically for CANBUS and PWM compatibility.

Happy hunting — and good luck.
