How We Tested 15 LED Headlight Bulbs

There are dozens of LED headlight bulbs on the market. Even after choosing LED over HID, the options can feel overwhelming.

So, we set up a controlled test.

We used a 2016 Dodge Ram reflector headlight housing. Then, we created a fixed testing station with:

  • A digital light meter

  • Wall reference marks

  • Locked camera settings

First, we photographed each beam pattern. Next, we measured peak brightness (max lux) at 23 feet. Finally, we compared beam shape, color, and glare.

Because we controlled every variable, the results show real differences between brands.

Baseline: 55W Philips Halogen Bulb

  • Beam Pattern: Good shape, but dim

  • Color: Yellow

  • Lumen Rating: ~1,100

  • Measured Lux (23 ft): 720

  • Rank: #14 of 15

This bulb gives us a reference point. Although it produces a clean beam, it lacks brightness.

Lower-Output LED Options

Philips X-TREME Vision (9.3W)

  • Warranty: 3 Years

  • Beam Pattern: Good, but not bright

  • Color: 5,500K–6,000K

  • Lumen Rating: 1,200

  • Measured Lux: 950

  • Rank: #12

It improves color. However, it doesn’t significantly outperform halogen.

Alibaba Ribbed Fin Heat Sink

  • Warranty: 18 Months

  • Beam Pattern: Too tall, poor alignment

  • Measured Lux: 1,130

  • Rank: #13

The beam spreads too vertically. As a result, glare increases and usable light drops.

Kensun CREE Chips (60W)

  • Warranty: 2 Years

  • Beam Pattern: Flood-like, uneven

  • Measured Lux: 590

  • Rank: #15

This bulb actually performs worse than halogen. Moreover, the beam pattern looks unsafe for night driving.

Bright but Problematic Bulbs

Some bulbs measure high lux numbers. However, beam shape matters just as much.

XHP50 Style (Street Glow / Nineo / etc.)

  • Measured Lux: 1,680

  • Rank: #2 (Brightness Only)

Although it ranks high in lux, the beam sits too tall. Therefore, it creates excessive glare.

Auxbeam F-16 (60W)

  • Measured Lux: 1,250

  • Rank: #6

The pattern looks more like a floodlight. While bright, it spreads light too high.

P6 / Axiom / LEDONLY (45W)

  • Measured Lux: 1,580

  • Rank: #4

It produces strong brightness. Still, the beam pattern lacks proper cutoff control.

Mid-Tier Solid Performers

Putco Silver-Lux

  • Warranty: 2 Years

  • Measured Lux: 1,150

  • Rank: #7

It delivers a clean pattern. However, it does not compete with the top-tier options in raw output.

Putco Nite-Lux / S-V.2

  • Measured Lux: 1,005

  • Rank: #11

The beam stretches vertically. While aiming helps reduce glare, you lose distance visibility.

Morimoto 2Stroke (34W)

Morimoto

  • Warranty: 3 Years

  • Measured Lux: 1,410

  • Rank: #5

The hotspot sits correctly. However, the beam remains taller than ideal.

Top Performers

S-V.3 (30W)

  • Warranty: 2 Years

  • Measured Lux: 1,660

  • Rank: #2 (2nd Best Overall)

This bulb produces an excellent beam shape. In addition, the hotspot sits in the correct position. It balances brightness and control well.

#1 Best – GTR Lighting GEN 3 Ultra (25W)

GTR Lighting

  • Warranty: Lifetime

  • Measured Lux: 1,730

  • Rank: #1

This bulb delivered the best overall performance.

The beam pattern closely matches factory halogen shape. However, it shines brighter and whiter. Furthermore, glare remains minimal.

Because it combines proper focus with strong lux output, it wins the shootout.

Why Beam Pattern Matters More Than Lumens

Many brands advertise inflated lumen ratings. However, raw lumen claims mean little without proper focus.

A tall or scattered beam creates glare. Consequently, it blinds oncoming drivers and wastes usable light.

On the other hand, a controlled beam puts light exactly where you need it.

That’s why we measured lux at a fixed point. Lux tells us how much usable light actually hits the road.

Final Thoughts

In this 15-bulb shootout, we found massive differences between brands.

Some bulbs measured bright but produced dangerous glare. Others looked clean but lacked output.

Ultimately, the GTR Lighting GEN 3 Ultra delivered the best combination of brightness, beam shape, and control.
